Four innovative architecture and urban design projects have been chosen as winners of The Municipal Art Society of New York’s 2013 MASterworks Awards. Campbell Sports Center (Steven Holl Architects) has won the top honor, “Best New Building,” while “Best Restoration” goes to McCarren Pool and Bathhouse (Rogers Marvel). “Best Neighborhood Catalyst” award will be given to the Barclays Center (SHoP Architects) and “Best New Urban Amenity,” will go to Weiss/Manfredi’s Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center in Brooklyn. The MASterworks Awards, hosted annually by the Municipal Art Society, recognize projects completed in the preceding year that both exemplify excellence in architecture and urban design and that make a significant contribution to New York’s built environment. This year’s awards are sponsored by Silverstein Properties and will be held on the 68th floor of 4 World Trade Center, which will be the first building to open on the 16-acre WTC site Wednesday, November 13, 2013. An impressive pool of nominees made the evaluation process especially challenging for this year’s jury, which comprised architect Pedro Gadanho (Curator of Contemporary Architecture, Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA), Gabriel Calatrava (Principal, Calatrava), Toni Griffin (Professor of Architecture and Director, J. Max Bond Center, Spitzer School of Architecture, City College of New York, CUNY), and Mimi Hoang (Partner, nArchitects).
