Architecture Beyond Sight

architecture grand central station pediment new york

This October is the ninth annual Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month, founded by Art Education for the Blind (AEB). The mission of AEB is to make art, art history, and visual culture accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. Since AEB’s founding in 1987, it has worked with museums across the nation and around the world.

Art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo, a longtime MAS tour leader, suggested applying what she had learned at MoMA and the Guggenheim to walking tours. We thought it was an excellent idea, especially since the best of architecture and design has more than eye appeal.

Our intended audience includes both the visually impaired and those who would like to explore architectural experiences in the realm of the other senses. Come along to the whispering gallery at Grand Central Terminal, the cascading waters of the September 11 Memorial, the stonework and sod of the Irish Hunger Memorial and much more.

Saturday, September 3, 11:00 a.m. – Beyond Sight: Grand Central Terminal

Sunday, October 30, Noon – Beyond Sight: The September 11 & Irish Hunger Memorials
