Now Accepting Applications for the 2016 Docent Class

MAS is now accepting applications to join the April 2016 Tour34: Empire to Penn docent class. From railroads to retail, sidewalks to skyscrapers, expertly trained MAS docents lead Tour34 guests on an exploration of the untold history and unfolding future of this bustling hub of transportation and commerce. Tour-goers will hear firsthand the latest plans to reimagine this historic neighborhood, including ideas for building a new Penn Station, re-drawing the street grid, and adding a new business district the size of downtown Minneapolis to the shores of the Hudson.

The class is comparable to a graduate level introduction to the history of New York City and takes place in our office, located at 488 Madison Avenue on Saturdays April 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 10am to 4:30pm. Apply today!

Our five-session course offers interested volunteers the opportunity to become an official MAS docent, with expert speakers, essential readings, research, and hands-on experience preparing each docent to develop and lead their own unique tour on and around W. 34th Street in Manhattan. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and have an unquenchable thirst for all things New York City! No prior tour guide experience is required. Tour34: Empire to Penn walking tour is led each Friday and Saturday at 12:30pm and lasts 90-minutes. Certified MAS docents must lead at least one tour a month. There is no charge for the course, however trainees are responsible for purchasing the necessary reading material.

Applicants who are chosen for an in-person interview will be asked to come in to the MAS office and meet with the director of the docent program and give a 3-minute presentation on a topic of their choice. Applicants may use light notes to guide their presentation, but may not read from a script. Visual aids are allowed. The entire interview will not last longer than 30 minutes. Please note that we receive many applications and may not interview all candidates. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 11, 2016.
