Calling All Entrepreneurs

Last month, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) released its Vacant Lot Temporary Activation request for proposals (RFP) for consultants to design and operate temporary developments in Brownsville and East New York. Fifteen City-owned sites are available for sublease under this program for uses as diverse as pop-up retail, food trucks, agriculture, innovation labs, community clinics and light manufacturing.

The goal of this initiative is to activate vacant lots while encouraging economic activity and job growth in East New York and Brownsville. This is a fantastic opportunity for existing businesses to expand and for new businesses to launch. The Vacant Lot Temporary Activation program falls under EDC’s LINK Initiative, launched this spring, to better connect New York City’s low-income residents and neighborhoods to emerging economic opportunities.

The Vacant Lot Temporary Activation RFP is due July 1, 2013 and is downloadable from the EDC’s website.

Additionally, our Brownsville Partnership and Hope Planning Advisory Council partners are holding an open house in Brownsville tomorrow night where the EDC will be speaking about the RFP process and community members will be offering input on what they want to see on the lots. The open house will be at the Howard Houses Community Center at 90 Watkins Street in Brooklyn on Wednesday, June 5th from 6-8pm. Anyone interested in learning more about this opportunity is welcome to attend.
