Brighton Beach Deco

Elegant Architecture at the Seashore

With Matt Postal

This vibrant seaside community contains a remarkable concentration of Art Deco buildings, mostly apartment houses that date from 1935 to 1940. Built on speculation for middle-class tenants and rivalling the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, these unsung gems were designed by mainly Brooklyn architects, including such prolific firms as Kavy & Kavovitt and Martyn Weinstein. We’ll meander through the blocks that border the boardwalk, viewing examples that display lively brickwork and polychrome detail. Many contain original lobbies, which, when possible, will be visited.
