Crown Heights South, Part 1

Old and New in Brooklyn

With Suzanne Spellen & Morgan Munsey

Located along the hilly terminal moraine between Crown Heights North and Flatbush, the area was home to the Kings County Penitentiary, scrub farmland and rocks for most of the 19th century. It wasn’t until after the 20th century began that large scale residential development began in southern Crown Heights, between Eastern Parkway and Empire Boulevard. The western side of the neighborhood was home to large institutions; the Consumer’s Brewery, the Troop C Armory, and later, schools, theaters and Ebbets Field. These, along with rowhouse and apartment blocks, and Brooklyn’s Automobile Row make up Part 1 of the Crown Heights South tour, led by Suzanne Spellen and Morgan Munsey.
