Mexican Modernism in New York: Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera

[Virtual tour] Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo are among the most renowned modern Mexican artists. Their works explore cultural and personal identity, postcolonialism, and the struggles of the working class. Rivera was influenced by avant-garde movements such as Cubism and Post-Impressionism. In the 1920s, he studied Renaissance fresco painting before joining the pioneering Mexican Muralist Movement, which later inspired Depression-era murals in the United States. He received major commissions in New York, San Francisco, and Detroit. Frida Kahlo’s work is more closely associated with Surrealism and is deeply autobiographical. Her paintings are smaller in scale and rich with personal symbolism. Viewed together, their art provides powerful insight into the complexity and richness of modern Mexico in the aftermath of the Revolution.
