Park Avenue

Midtown Manhattan's Grand Boulevard

With Francis Morrone

Park Avenue emerged as a prestige address following the 1913 opening of the new Grand Central Terminal. But most of what went up in the 1920s came down after World War II when a new corporate gigantism combined with International Style architecture transformed Park Avenue into the gleaming icon of the postwar order. Here were built several of the most notable postwar buildings in New York: Pan Am, Seagram, Lever Brothers, Pepsi-Cola. We will recall the glamour of Park Avenue as it appeared in “The Best of Everything” (1959) and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961), consider what was lost, and look for some surprises.
