[In-person tour] Stuyvesant Heights was a suburban retreat for wealthy industrialists when it began to be developed in the late 19th century as an upscale urban neighborhood to complement adjacent Bedford. Most of the rowhouse blocks were built between 1880 and 1910. Joining beautiful brownstone blocks were apartment buildings, impressive houses of worship, commercial areas and civic buildings, all creating a very pleasing and desirable streetscape. Today the area roughly between Halsey and Madison streets, Throop and Malcolm X Avenues is a proposed historic district called Stuyvesant North. This tour with Suzanne Spellen & Morgan Munsey will explore the area, looking at the fine architecture and history of the neighborhood, highlighting its worthiness for landmarking. Some of Brooklyn’s finest architects put their mark on these blocks.
