The War Resister’s League, A Place That Matters

war resisters leagueThe War Resister’s League [339 Lafayette Street in Manhattan], organized in 1923, is one of the nation’s oldest pacifist organizations. In 1969, the League bought the three-story building at the corner of Lafayette and Bleecker to secure a place for itself and other like-minded groups. In 1978, it transferred ownership to the A.J. Muste Institute, named after one of America’s leading anti-war, labor and civil rights activists. For decades now, in the “Peace Pentagon,” pacifist and leftist groups have gotten office space at deep discounts made possible by the higher rents charged for ground-floor storefronts. In addition to the League and the Muste Institute, other activist tenants are the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants, Metropolitan Council on Housing, Nicaragua Solidarity Network, Paper Tiger and Deep Dish Television, the Socialist Party of New York City, and the Libertarian Book Club.
