Transportation Links to the Far West Side

Access is vital for any successful development on the Far West Side. The MAS supports the city’s proposed 7 line extension, but wants to consider an additional segment of the 7 along 34th Street back to Penn Station. This would link Manhattan’s three main transportation centers: Grand Central Terminal, the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Penn Station.

The current proposal would bring the 7 west from Times Square along 41st Street to 11th Avenue, then south to 34th Street. The first station would be a new 7 train terminus at 11th Avenue and 34th Street. A second station would be built near 11th Avenue and 41st Street as development extends north. The improvement would cost the city approximately $2 billion.

This proposal will bring mass transit to an underserved and growing part of the city in Clinton and Hell’s Kitchen. It will also support new development on the Far West Side, providing access for the roughly 112,000 new workers anticipated in the area by 2035.
