Tri-State Unveils “Penn for Peds” Campaign

people busy sidewalk midtown smallThe Tri-State Transportation Campaign recently held a contest to name their campaign to improve the pedestrian environment around Penn Station. The winner: “Penn for Peds.” “In three short words, we’ve got a reclamation of pedestrian space, a locale, a beneficiary class, and a mission,” they said. The mission: “Currently, the streets and sidewalks surrounding the nation’s busiest rail station are inadequate at best. On top of supporting a plan put forward by Borough President Scott Stringer’s office to add sidewalk capacity and bike lanes to 33rd Street, Tri-State also supports the closing of 32nd Street between Greeley Square and Penn.” Sounds like a plan, but what about reopening the Gimbels Tunnel and other underground passageways? It would certainly take a load off the sidewalks! Mobilizing the Region: “Penn for Peds! A Campaign is Named”
