Each week, we highlight stories from around the web that focus on our 11 for 2011 Watch List. The Bronx This week the Times profiled Hutchinson Metro Center. The thriving corporate center in the Bronx recently completed a 9-story Class A office tower and will start construction on another tower in the fall. Metro Center’s location near four major hospitals has contributed to the area’s growth as an important health and medical services center, sparking office real-estate interest in the northern borough. Coney Island Construction is expected to begin later this summer on the new Steeplechase Plaza. The re-birth of the popular amusement park is gaining some momentum with the recent opening of Luna Park and the unveiling of the Scream Zone. Lower Manhattan The “New Downtown” conference sponsored by NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate and Silverstein Properties wrapped up this week. Panelists discussed the challenges and opportunities that face Lower Manhattan’s continued growth as a live/work community. The conference also addressed the planning of the 9/11 Memorial, the re-attachment of Battery Park City to the street grid, the impact of Frank Gehry’s recently completed 8 Spruce Street, and the proposed Lower Manhattan Performing Arts Center.
