Inside/Outside Organizing in Greenwich Village

In this walking tour through Greenwich Village, participants will engage with the histories of incarceration, policing, resistance, and organizing in Greenwich Village & lower Manhattan, especially those grounded within and across prison walls—inside/outside. Stops include the Stonewall Inn, and the former Women’s House of Detention, now Jefferson Market Garden. On this walk, we will draw out the legacies and lessons from these histories, as well as how they shape and inspire our struggles for liberation today.

Accessibility

This is an active tour. Participants should feel comfortable walking or riding if using a wheelchair for up to 2-2.5 miles. Be prepared to remain outside and on your feet for a significant period of time (estimated 2 hours). There will be noise from cars and people as we are outside. Bring an umbrella if needed for that day’s weather. If you bring young children, you should make sure you have a stroller in which they can ride for the entire duration of the tour. The route will go near public spaces, narrow streets ways, and a large park with benches. Transit options in the area include the A, C, E, B, D, M, and F trains, and CitiBikes.
