Municipal Art Society of New York Appoints Keri Butler as President
The Board of Directors of the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) proudly announces Keri Butler’s appointment as President of the organization. Keri has been a vital part of MAS since December 2022, first serving as Vice President of Planning and Policy. Among her notable achievements at MAS, she launched the Enduring Culture Initiative, supported by the Mellon Foundation and the New York Community Trust, which aims to preserve NYC’s cultural heritage through place-based community-informed solutions, and spearheaded a collaboration with The New York Climate Exchange, highlighting design innovations for extreme weather.
Keri brings more than 20 years of experience in public art, design, and policy. Previously, at the NYC Public Design Commission (PDC), she held multiple roles, most recently as Executive Director. She was instrumental in developing initiatives that promote equity in public art and design excellence at the intersection of sustainability and public health. Keri’s experience working with city agencies and private partners has informed her solutions-focused and collaborative approach.
At the PDC, Keri led the review of complex mixed-use developments, citywide prototypes, and public artworks. She worked closely with MAS to conserve city-owned sculptures and paintings as part of the MAS Adopt-A-Monument program. Her leadership supported projects ranging from the renovation of City Hall to Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts.

“As Interim President of MAS since December 2024 Keri has impressed everyone she has worked with— taking the reins, advancing programs, strengthening external recognition, and working toward increasing financial stability,” said Jill Lerner and Richard Olcott, MAS Co-Chairs. The Board enthusiastically supports her promotion. We are fortunate to have such a creative, responsive, and committed leader guiding MAS into the future.”
“I’m honored to continue serving MAS and helping shape a more livable, just, and sustainable New York at this critical time,” said Keri Butler. “This city thrives when we balance growth and preservation— ensuring that our historic and cultural spaces not only honor the past, but evolve to meet the demands of today, from climate resilience and energy efficiency to affordable housing and public open space. That balance is at the heart of everything we do. I remain committed to further advancing this mission as President.”
Outside of MAS, Keri chairs the Historic Preservation Committee of the American Planning Association’s Urban Design and Preservation Division and is an avid sailor and member of the Miramar Yacht Club in Sheepshead Bay. She holds a Masters of Art in Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her appointment signals a new chapter for MAS as it builds upon its mission to shape a vibrant, equitable, and resilient New York City.
