Union Square Public AR(t) Tour

Janes Walk

SOLD OUT, WAITLIST OPEN

Led By Tali Cantor AND Christina Lok, Director of Planning, Union Square Partnership

Explore Union Square through the lens of the neighborhood’s multimedia public art installations on this interactive Jane’s Walk led by Union Square Partnership and featuring inCituAR. This guided walk will explore a range of site-specific artworks that bring surprise and delight into our everyday public spaces – from sculpture and asphalt murals to digital art experiences and augmented reality.

We will visit several temporary art installations in the district and discuss how artists respond to the unique character, history, and movement of Union Square. Participants of all ages and experiences will learn how public art is managed and experienced in a busy urban setting, and how technology like inCituAR is opening new possibilities for interacting with art in the public space. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended!

Accessibility

This walk will take place outdoors in Union Square. We will cover less than half a mile walking at a relaxed pace with several stops for discussion and interaction, and there are benches nearby to sit on if people need to rest. The route is generally flat, taking place mostly on sidewalks, paved plazas, and park interiors that are accessible to wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Union Square is a major transit hub with access to the subway, bus, CitiBike, and PATH train. Participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes for walking and to bring water if needed. This walk will be held outdoors, so we advise participants to look at the weather forecast in advance and prepare accordingly. The walk will include opportunities to pause, observe, and interact with public artworks of various types and scales, so this event is suitable for participants of all ages, abilities, and levels of familiarity with art, urban planning, and architecture.
