A Meadow Grows in Brooklyn: The Naval Cemetery Landscape

Janes Walk

Led By Avvah Rossi, Director of Horticulture and Greenway Stewardship/Brooklyn Greenway Initiative

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative built and maintains the Naval Cemetery Landscape on the site of the former Naval Hospital Cemetery at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a place for retreat and remembrance while honoring its rich layers of natural and cultural history. The Naval Cemetery Landscape is a native plant meadow and pollinator habitat, and provides visitors with an escape from urban life.

When visiting the Naval Cemetery Landscape, visitors can pick up a self guided tour brochure at our entrance to learn more about our native meadow, the history of the NCL, and our site’s features. Follow up with our gardeners on-site to dig deeper into our horticultural practices and to share nature observations. Early May is a great time to spot migratory birds, newly emerging perennial plants, and various pollinators buzzing with activity.

The boardwalk that winds through the Naval Cemetery Landscape is wheelchair accessible, and visitors can access the site from the sidewalk via a ramp that leads to our entrance. If in a wheelchair, it is only possible to access the Naval Cemetery Landscape from the Greenway and sidewalk leading from Kent Avenue. The Naval Cemetery Landscape is located alongside the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, and bike racks are available at the site for bike parking (bring your own lock). The closest CitiBike station is at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, about a 10 minute walk away. The closest subway stations are the Marcy Avenue J/M/Z station (11 min walk) and either the Flushing Avenue or Classon Avenue G stations (both a 15 min walk). The Naval Cemetery Landscape is located near the B57, B62, B48, and B110 bus lines, and can also be accessed by the NYC Ferry East River or Astoria Routes via the South Williamsburg or Brooklyn Navy Yard landings.
