[In-person tour] Stroll along Central Park South and learn about the most notable Art Deco, Modern and Contemporary architecture along the way, as well as a few outstanding artworks. The southern border of Central Park has long been home to some of New York’s most prestigious hotels such as the Plaza, Sherry-Netherland, Park Lane and Ritz-Carlton. In addition to park views, Central Park South’s luxurious apartment buildings now boast the most expensive apartment ever sold in America. We’ll explore Columbus Circle including the renovation of the Circle itself, the construction of the massive mixed-use Time Warner Center, now Deutsche Bank Center, and the preservation controversy surrounding the design of the MAD Museum, which reclad Edward Durell Stone’s “Lollipop Building.” Tour guide John Arbuckle leads tours for the MAS, AIANY and others. He is President of DOCOMOMO US/New York Tri-State, the local chapter of an international organization dedicated to preserving Modern architecture.
