Beacons of Change

Janes Walk

Led By Linda Dianto, Executive Director, National Lighthouse Museum AND Stevie Peters

This in-person guided walk explores the history of the National Lighthouse Museum and the Lighthouse Point site, once home to the U.S. Lighthouse Service’s General Depot. Participants will learn how this waterfront complex supported lighthouse construction and maintenance across the country, while also examining the daily lives of workers and keepers connected to the site. As we move through the grounds, we’ll trace the transformation from an active federal facility to a preserved museum space, highlighting architecture, maritime history, and the evolving relationship between New Yorkers and their harbor. Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for light walking and standing.

Accessibility

The walk will cover approximately 0.5–1 mile at a moderate pace with frequent stops. The route is primarily along paved walkways and open plaza areas around Lighthouse Point. The museum is ADA accessible, though some historic elements may have limited access. Seating is limited but available in nearby public areas. The site is located a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Participants are encouraged to reach out in advance with specific accessibility needs.
