Domino Sugar History Walk

Janes Walk

SOLD OUT

Led By Geoffrey Cobb, Fordham University

Join author of “The Rise and Fall of the Sugar King” Geoffrey Cobb as he explains the history of the Domino plant, which was the largest sugar refinery in the world and the linchpin in the “Sugar Trust.” For decades sugar refining was Brooklyn’s largest industry and the Havemayer family, who built the plant, became fabulously wealthy sugar refiners. The tour focuses on the brutal conditions for the thousands of largely immigrant workers who toiled and sometimes died working in the landmarked building. We will discuss the often the workers’ often violent fights for better wages and conditions and we will also discuss the controversial transformation of the plant into luxury housing and elite office space.
