Ghosts of the Polo Grounds Shuttle

Janes WalkIn Person

Led By Tom Gaffney

We will explore the development of the Highbridge neighborhood from rural to urban, which occurred in the span of a single lifetime. As with other neighborhoods in the Outer Boroughs, the introduction of railroads and subways fueled this phenomenon. The 9th Avenue El/Polo Grounds Shuttle was a major factor here. Houses dating from each wave of development still stand, giving a good idea of how the process unfolded. Although the Polo Grounds Shuttle was torn down in 1958, there are still elements remaining. Some of them are well hidden, and some hiding in plain sight.

Accessibility
The walk distance is about 1.5 miles, with some fairly steep hills and stairs, which we will take slowly.
