Intentional Spacemaking: Public Space, Systems, and Us

Janes Walk

Led By Valerie Farber, Spatial Medium

Join us at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park, Brooklyn to explore what it means to intentionally create public space for ourselves and our communities.

Together we will look at why the space works or why it doesn’t through an Intentional Spacemaking™ lens (ie: systems integration of the physical container, activation, and context/care perspectives). How was this part of the park initially created? Who adapted it and why? Does the current design support local community?

We’ll end with a chat about how we can take what we’ve learned about public spacemaking and bring it into our daily lives to support ourselves and our communities.

Please come open and curious, ready to investigate the environment we are in, the many systems that affect and intersect that environment, and how we each experience and create space in the world.

Accessibility

The part of the park where we will be walking is sometimes broken up and can be unsteady underfoot. We will be navigating a few steps here and there but the terrain is fairly flat and we can certainly adjust our path to avoid stairs if needed. There is some shade under trees and various built structures, but we will be outside and in sun/rain/weather/etc. The closest public transit to the start point is the Q/S stop at Prospect Park stop. The closest public transit to the end point is the Q at Parkside.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
