Landmark Battles in Midtown Manhattan

[In-person tour] A review of some of the most controversial landmark preservation battles in Midtown Manhattan during the mid- to late 20th century: the Villard Houses, St. Bartholomew’s Church complex, Lever House, and Grand Central Terminal. Against the backdrop of an overview of the Landmarks Commission and historic preservation issues generally, the tour covers the histories of these four sites, focusing on the specific historic preservation issues raised by each one. The walk will include group discussions. Mr. Robins served on the Landmarks Commission staff (Deputy Director of Research, Director of Survey) in the 1980s and ‘90s.
