Morrisania: The Heart of the Bronx

Janes Walk

Led By David Herszenson

The South Bronx was once owned by the Morris family, from which Morrisania gets its name. As the family sold off its holdings in the nineteenth century and transport to the Bronx became easier, villages and neighborhoods began to form.

Morrisania is one of those neighborhoods.

Some of the sites we will see on this guided walk include:

-Historic churches
-The oldest standing former synagogue in the Bronx
-Victorian homes
-The first public high school built in the Bronx, designed by the architect who shaped NYC school architecture
-A grand, former armory
-A modern apartment building built on the site of a former Catholic church
-A designated NYC Historic District of turn of the century brownstones.

Accessibility

The in person walk takes place on sidewalks in an urban neighborhood. As is true in most of the Bronx, there are hills.
