[Virtual tour] During the earlier years, the Met was quite resistant against collecting contemporary art and this department was only founded in 1967. The question was difficult to answer: How do you confidently judge brand new art to know it will hold its value? By now the Met has become recognized for its superb collection of masterpieces of modern and contemporary art, which will soon move into a brand new home, the Tang Wing, designed by Frida Escobedo. This tour with art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo will focus on 20th century works by international artists, depicting NYC, this fantastic new metropolis with all its superlatives. From Cubism, Surrealism, Magic Realism, and Abstraction, artists chose a great variety of styles to capture the ever changing, energetic nature of the City that never sleeps.
