Places We Gather is a self-guided audio tour about Fort Greene, Brooklyn, created by Brooklyn-based Interference Archive and the Brooklyn Public Library. In the tour, Fort Greene community members share stories about coming together to support one another through art, food, conversation, and mutual aid initiatives.
The tour is just over a mile of walking and about an hour of audio. It starts outside of BPL’s Walt Whitman Library (currently closed for renovations), passes Fort Greene Park, Myrtle Avenue, and Flushing Avenue, and ends in Commodore Barry Park. It features the voices of 14 individuals who describe how generations of neighbors have invested their time, energy and care into this Brooklyn neighborhood.
The tour, walking map, and transcript are available online, including a Spanish translation of the transcript.
Accessibility
To do the walk as described on the map, participants will be walking a bit over a mile, including up one set of stairs into Fort Greene Park. There are restrooms accessible at Fort Greene Park and Commodore Barry Park, and the route passes businesses that have food and restrooms on Myrtle Avenue.
Participants can also enjoy the audio tour without physically walking the route. Because it is pre-recorded, they can listen from wherever they choose, as with a podcast.
The tour is designed to be accessible to people who do not have, or want to use, smart phones. Using a library card, participants can check out a listening device and pick up free headphones from the Clinton Hill Library Branch of BPL, located at 380 Washington Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11238.
The transcripts of each segment of the tour are accessible on our webpage in both English and Spanish.
