Ray Carney’s Harlem: 1959–1976

Janes Walk

Led By Daniel Pecoraro

This is a (now semi-authorized) love letter to Colson Whitehead’s Harlem novels. Following along some of the locations (real-life and fictionalized) in the two books, this walk will look at 25 years of Harlem history and reflect upon the context of New York in that greater period.

Accessibility

The walk will be along occasionally hilly ground (though all along city sidewalks) for about two hours. The start and end points of the walk are closest to the A/C/D at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue; the 125th Street stations of the 1 (at Broadway) and 2/3 (on Lenox Ave/Malcolm X Blvd) are also close by. The M2, M3, M4, M10, M11, M60 SBS, M100, M101, and Bx15 are all near the walk start/end points, and the M60 SBS, M100, M101, and Bx15 connect to the 4/5/6 at 125th and Lexington and the Metro-North at 125th and Park. Citibike docks are available at 124th and 126th along St. Nicholas.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
