[In-person tour] A Manhattan neighborhood known for artistry and innovation, Greenwich Village contains some of New York City’s first apartment houses. Led by architectural historian Matt Postal, our route focuses on mostly late 19th century designs called French Flats and Bachelor Apartments. Named for places and people, in contrast to typical tenements these middle-to-upper class residential structures were designed by leading architectural figures of the day, including James Renwick, Jr., Henry J. Hardenbergh, and McKim, Mead & Bigelow (before White joined the firm).
