Roots & Rhythms: A Walking Tour of Black East Elmhurst & Corona

Janes Walk

SOLD OUT, WAITLIST FULL

Led By Sunny Hendre, Shanel Thomas-Henry Office

Lace up your shoes and join us for a free 2.5-hour walking tour through East Elmhurst and Corona, guided by an OG from the neighborhood who carries the stories no textbook ever told. Starting at the Langston Hughes Library on Northern Blvd, we’ll stop at Dizzy Gillespie’s house, Louis Armstrong’s home, the Dorie Miller, St. Gabriel’s Church, the legendary “Bomb Building,” and the block where Kool G Rap came up — tracing the unbroken line from bebop to Black Power to hip hop. We’ll explore the radical roots of Black activism, the Black Panther presence in Queens, and the art that kept it all alive. The tour ends at Corona Plaza on Roosevelt Ave — a living canvas and a fitting finale. Rain or shine. Bring water, comfortable shoes, and a camera or sketchbook. Come ready to be moved — and maybe inspired to make something of your own.

There will be a lot of walking and the meeting place of the tour is a 15-minute walk from the train.
