[Virtual tour] Starting in Tompkins Square, historian Matt Postal will “lead” us west, shedding light on the architecture and history of this colorful East Village thoroughfare. We’ll stop to look at Federal style houses, structures associated with the era when the neighborhood was called Kleindeutschland, and various buildings in and around Astor Place, such as the former Wanamaker Store Annex and a controversial office-academic building by the Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki that detractors have nicknamed “The Death Star.”
