This walk focuses on two redevelopment projects in Central Harlem that would bring billions in private capital investment to an area sorely in need of investment, while undermining the district’s black American plurality, a status protected by federal voting rights act. During the walk, we will examine the physical, social, and political landscape, address the challenges and rewards of the two proposals, and analyze the response from various community stakeholders, as well as envision the next steps needed to ensure that underdevelopment isn’t used as a barrier to change.
Accessibility
We begin at 135 Street and walk once around the entire campus; then we walk north ten short blocks to 145 Street and walk once around the site. Participants could jump on the subway one stop
from 135 to 145, but there’s lots of interesting history to discuss along the Avenue.
