How much history can a “new” neighborhood hold? More than you’d think. Everyone knows Long Island City as one of NYC’s fastest-growing neighborhoods, but scratch the surface and you’ll find a rich history hiding in plain sight.
During this in-person, guided group walk, we’ll start on the steps of a 150-year-old courthouse, take in some remnants of the old subway system, and check out some underappreciated row houses. We’ll also learn the beefy backstory of who purchased the land that would become Murray Park, before finishing at what many consider one of the city’s finest examples of adaptive reuse. My grandmother always said this neighborhood had the best views in the city, come see if she was right.
Accessibility
The walk should all be one level, however there might be some curbs, street crossings and difficult to navigate sidewalks. We will cover about a mile walking with a handful of stops throughout including a park which will have some benches to sit on at about the halfway point. The tour is most easily accessible via subway on the G at Court Square and the 7 at Court Square is also nearby. Slightly farther away there is Queensboro Plaza with the N/W and Queens Plaza E, F, and R trains are about the same distance. There are multiple bus routes and Citi Bike stations nearby. Street parking in the area is limited though there is the Court Square Municipal Parking Garage located behind the courthouse.
