Remembering Tim Prentice

February 9, 2026

The Municipal Art Society of New York expresses its profound sadness upon the passing of Tim Prentice. Tim served on the Municipal Art Society Board from 1968 through 2009 and held the role of President from 1974-76 and Vice President from 1972-74. Under his leadership as Board President, he helped lead MAS’s landmark fight against the demolition of Grand Central Terminal.

Read more about Tim Prentice’s life and accomplishments. Throughout his long tenure on the Board, Tim was an active participant, exercising his vote as a Past President and contributing to MAS publications, including “The Livable City.” Throughout his life, he served on other New York City-based boards and was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. A practicing architect, Tim co-founded the architecture firm Prentice & Chan (later becoming Prentice & Chan, Ohlhausen), in 1965. Tim was also an accomplished kinetic sculptor, eventually leaving his firm to dedicate himself to his craft in his second career as a practicing artist.

MAS is honored to be a part of Tim’s wonderful legacy. We send our condolences to the Prentice family, Tim’s friends, and his colleagues.
