Audubon Bird Mural Project

Janes Walk

CANCELLED

Led By Leigh Hallingby, Licensed NYC Tour Guide, Harlem Walks

The goal of the Audubon Mural Project is to create murals of over 300 North American birds in the northern Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton and Washington Heights where John James Audubon spent the last 10 years of his life. We will see about 40 murals, plus Audubon’s grave site, in a 50-minute slide presentation with live commentary. We will also visit Audubon’s impressive gravesite in the Trinity Church Cemetery. Because the mural artists have license to represent the birds in any way that they choose, there is great variation in the styles of painting. And the murals range from lovely panels that fill a window frame to spectacular works covering the entire side of a building. All of the birds painted have been identified as being threatened by climate change. There will be time at the end for Q&A.
