Jackson Heights: Landmarks, Vendors, and Identity

Janes Walk

Led By Daniela Benitez, New York University

This guided walking tour briefly explores the landmarked historic district within Jackson Heights before heading to Roosevelt Avenue and Junction Boulevard, a corridor shaped by Latin American businesses, food, and music. While historic buildings remain protected, the presence of street vendors has been a point of debate, as they navigate New York City’s permitting system, crowded sidewalks, and shifting regulations. They represent a socioeconomic legacy found in major cities worldwide, raising questions about the right to space and preservation of culture in an urban context. This mile-long walk includes a stop before Junction Blvd for those who prefer to bypass vendor areas. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and cash if you wish to make a purchase along the way.

This walk is sold out, but the waitlist is open.

Accessibility

For this guided group walk, it will take about an hour and it is a mile long. The sidewalks can get very cramped at times—there will be a brief rest stop at the triangle between Aske St, Whitney Av, and Roosevelt Av, where attendees can choose whether they would like to walk up Junction Boulevard. This street in particular can get very crowded. It is an opportunity to connect with vendors if the attendees would like to eat on the way to the final stop, but it is perfectly fine if they would like to end the walk near the triangle if it is inaccessible. We will be crossing a lot of streets on the way—I will make sure to go at a steady pace to keep everyone together and safe. The 82nd street-Jackson Heights station on the 7 train is the closest to the meeting location, and the Junction Boulevard station on the 7 train is the closest to the ending location. There are several CitiBike stations along the route of the walk, as well as bus stations for the Q29, Q32, Q33, and Q72.
