Architects have long celebrated Sunnyside’s Art Deco buildings and the historically landmarked Sunnyside Gardens district, but everyone can appreciate the many sights and stories of its creativity and culture. This relaxed tour will trace some highlights, from Thalia Spanish Theater (NYC’s first and only bilingual Hispanic theater), the Bliss Theater (a rare surviving example of an Egyptian Revival movie palace), and iconic Sunnyside Arch, to plaques and murals commemorating jazz and punk rock pioneers. Along the way, the tour will note both Art Deco treasures as well as new storefronts that are cultivating creativity in this close-knit community 20 minutes from Grand Central. Led by a 15+ year resident with an interest in artistic preservation, strolling in Sunnyside, and sharing the pleasures of this gem of a neighborhood.
