From Athens to Manhattan: NYC’s Classical Roots

Janes Walk

Led By Bryan Bin

Put on your togas and embark on a tour through Midtown Manhattan, uncovering the enduring influence of classical Greek and Roman architecture on the city’s iconic landmarks. Our journey begins at the New York Public Library, where we’ll admire its grand Corinthian columns and discuss the Beaux-Arts movement’s classical roots. Next, we’ll stroll to Grand Central Terminal, exploring its facade adorned with classical motifs and sculptures. Our path then leads us to the Rockefeller Center and Chrysler Building, where we’ll delve into how Art Deco incorporated classical elements within a modern urban complex. The tour concludes at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, highlighting its neo-Gothic architecture influenced by classical principles. Please wear comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and a camera to capture these architectural marvels!
