Brooklyn Down East, Part 2: Cypress Hills/Highland Park

A Dramatic Landscape

With Joe Svehlak

Join guide Joe Svehlak for a walk in the area east of Bushwick on the Queens border (known as the Eastern District) to explore the varied architecture of fine civic buildings, grand mansions, interesting row houses, and even a church by Richard Upjohn. We will visit the Cemetery of the Evergreens, an early example of the Rural Cemetery Movement  (1849) with views of Manhattan and the final resting place of some of Bushwick’s finest citizens. Highland Park also contains another unique World War One memorial by sculptor, Pietro Montana. This area with a hilly topography, due to the terminal moraine from the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age, makes for a fascinating walk up and down the streets.
