Central Park: An Outdoor Art Museum

Janes Walk

Led By Ginny Poleman, Volunteer Docent for the Municipal Arts Society

What is the most visited urban park in the country? New York’s Central Park — the country’s first landscaped public park — set the standard for city parks across the nation. With nearly 30 sculptures, beautiful reliefs, and variety of architecture, its 843-acres is both an urban natural jewel as well as visual feast for the eyes!

Join tour guide, Ginny Poleman, for an escape from the busy streets of Manhattan to explore these art stops and more:
• The “Shakespeare” sculpture commissioned by Edwin Booth
• The sculptural reliefs and tromp l’oeil murals of Bethesda Terrace
• The story behind the park’s most photographed sculpture, “Angel of the Waters”
• The park’s newest sculpture—the first since the 1960s, “Pioneering Women”
• The oldest man-made structure in New York City from Ancient Egypt
