Data Day: An Exploration of the NYC Public Space App

SOLD OUT

Join the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) on Thursday, August 7 from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM at Brooklyn Public Library – Greenpoint Branch for an afternoon of exploring the use of civic technology in public space advocacy through the NYC Public Space app. New York City is home to a diverse array of public spaces, including city parks, street plazas, Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS), national parks, state parks, and more. With the NYC Public Space app, for the first time users can explore all of these spaces in one easy-to-use map as well as contribute photos and descriptions to help build an even more comprehensive guide to New York City’s public areas.

At our meet-up, app creator Chris Whong will discuss his work as a technologist and how the project came to be. Then, attendees will head outside to explore and observe public spaces in the Greenpoint and Williamsburg area using the app.

About Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center
Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center serves as both a full-service library and a community hub for environmental awareness, activism and education.

At 15,000 square feet, the branch offers significant indoor and outdoor spaces for activities related to the exploration of the environment as well as everyday library use. Greenpoint Library features elements that interact with the natural world, including a gardened reading deck, windows that act as sun dials, and a cistern to collect rainwater for the rooftop demonstration garden. Inside, the library has distinct adult, young adult and children’s reading rooms and collection spaces, and community spaces for regular library programming as well as those supporting environmental education. Lab spaces for interactive projects, a large community event space (which divides into two of the lab spaces), lounge seating, small meeting rooms and staff spaces are distributed on the two main floors.
