Ghosts of the Polo Grounds Shuttle

Janes Walk

Led By Tom Gaffney

We will take a history- and planned development-oriented walk through the Highbridge neighborhood, ending at the Bronx end of the High Bridge itself. Along the way, we will see vestiges of the Polo Grounds Shuttle, some well hidden and others hiding in plain sight. This area went from completely rural to completely urban within the span of a lifetime, a process that we will explore. There are good examples of every phase of development left, which have resulted in the eclectic nature of this little-traveled enclave.

Accessibility

The walk is about 2 miles, with some stairs and fairly steep hills, which we will take slowly. You are never more than a half mile from a station on the No. 4 train. Close to the Major Deegan Expressway. There is plenty of parking. The meeting spot is one block south of the 167th Street station on the 4 train.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
