The Bronx’s Grand Concourse

Janes Walk

SOLD OUT

Led By Andrew Garn

This tour will be lead by photographer and author Andrew Garn, (NY by Neighborhood, Rizzoli 2022, Wildflowers of NYC, Cornell & NY Pigeon, powerHouse) The Grand Concourse is the spine of this neighborhood that features at its centerpiece the new Yankee Stadium and the sublime art-deco Bronx County Courthouse. It is also dotted with parks and substantial deco apartment building gems built in the 1930s and 40s when the expansion of the subway system facilitated rapid development of the Concourse area. Following WWI, the area received its first great wave of immigration including Jews, Irish, and Italians. Influenced by the City Beautiful movement throughout the United States, New York modeled the Grand Boulevard and Concourse (later shortened to Grand Concourse) after the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
