HerStory: Forest Hills

Janes Walk

Led By Greg Huang

We will be exploring Forest Hills, Queens, and the careers and impact of several notable women who, unknowingly to almost everyone, have lived or worked in this neighborhood. From the most famous female disability rights activist of the 20th century (Helen Keller) to the first woman on a major party presidential ticket (Geraldine Ferraro) to the world’s first female chess grandmaster (Susan Polgar), they have all made their mark on this neighborhood. We will also explore some other local landmarks in Forest Hills and discuss the history of the neighborhood Lastly, we will discuss how people get name recognition and how places are named after people, the underlying sexism in this process, and how we can better honor women who have changed history.

Accessibility

The walk will cover a distance of approximately 3 miles, and last about an hour and a half from start to finish. The entire route is more or less level, contains no steps or stairs, and does not prevent accessibility issues to wheelchairs. Both the start and end points are close to subway stations; the start is adjacent to the Forest Hills-71st Avenue station and the finish is adjacent to the Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike station. The starting point can also be accessed by the Q23, Q60 and Q64 buses, and the end point is accessible by the Q10, Q37, Q46 and Q60 buses.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
