[Virtual tour] On Ladies’ Mile, famed retailers crowded Broadway and Sixth Avenue, selling silver, furniture, rugs, dry goods, and Parisian fashions. In this popular but short-lived commercial district women could stroll comfortably without chaperons. Using current and historic views, architectural historian Matt Postal will discuss the historic district’s exceptionally well-preserved streetscape, including former stores and their once grand interiors, which in addition to abundant displays of merchandise incorporated grand staircases and glazed rotundas.
