For this in-person tour, we’ll explore how local and state politics and 1960s – 70s theories of urban renewal transformed sections of Central Brooklyn. Beginning at Brower Park, the tour will visit the I. M. Pei & M. Paul Friedberg-designed Superblocks that reinvisioned the traditional streetscape of brownstone Brooklyn when they were commissioned by the nascent Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. From there, participants will pass historic and contemporary architectural marvels of Crown Heights North en route to Restoration Plaza. See first-hand how an abandoned milk bottling plant was revived into a space for community-driven art, politics, and commerce, now poised to enter a new chapter as a 21st-century town square designed by David Adjaye in partnership with community members. Please wear comfortable shoes.

The route distance is a little over one mile along city sidewalks. It will be accessible to people in wheelchairs. Nearby subway stops include the Kingston Ave 3 train and Kingston Ave C train, as well as the B43, B45 and B65 bus service.
