In The Shadow of the Elevated Trains: A Hidden History of Manhattan Transit

Janes Walk

Led By Sean Bailey

The elevated trains (els for short) were the precursors to New York’s subway system. Starting with 1868’s Ninth Avenue El, these trains shaped Manhattan and defined neighborhoods. This walking tour will focus on downtown Manhattan, from West to East Village, and tell the story of the elevated trains through art by John French Sloan, Francis Criss, and Alice Neel, and historic artifacts and evidence still present today.

This walk is sold out, but the waitlist is open.

Accessibility

The walk will take place crosstown, from the West to the East Village. Transit and Citibike stations abound, although we will walk from 9th Avenue to 1st Avenue with several stops along the way. It should be accessible to wheelchairs, possibly with modifications.
