J. Marion Sims: Hero or Villain?

Janes Walk

Led By Marina Ortiz, East Harlem Preservation

Recently, the city approved relocation of the statue of J. Marion Sims—a white southern doctor who experimented on enslaved women without anesthesia or informed consent—from Central Park to Green-Wood Cemetery, where he is buried. Since 2010, East Harlem residents had maintained that the monument’s presence did a huge disservice to the neighborhood’s majority Black and Latino residents. This walk invites you to learn more about the (continued) campaign against the Sim statue, and why Brooklyn residents are now continuing the effort to remove his likeness.
