Timothy Daniel Sullivan grew up destitute along the Bowery, then called New York’s “Great Highway of the Poor.” Later, as a Tammany boss, he made the Bowery his domain for thirty years. On this guided walk along the Bowery, we will learn all about Big Tim, whose reign there corresponded to the Bowery’s most bustling, creative era, of theaters and sideshows and saloons, all catering to the surrounding, impoverished populations. We will stop at all the landmarks associated with him–among them are the Sohotel, where Big Tim sometimes lived and hosted his all-night poker games, and St Patricks Old Cathedral on nearby Mott Street, the location of his funeral in 1913. The Bowery and Big Tim were one, and his story is also the Bowery’s.
