Living Legacies of Collective Self-Determination in Los Sures, Williamsburg

Janes Walk

Led By Daniela Castillo, El Puente

Get your walking shoes on, activist hats ready, artistic smocks out and creative juices flowing with this walk led by El Puente, in collaboration with YOU! This in-person guided INTERACTIVE walk will take us through time to visit and embody the legacy of social justice wins led by community efforts in Los Sures/the Southside, Williamsburg, while simultaneously bringing us to contemporary grassroots work and how to join the movement! We’ll look at murals bred from collective efforts, visit sites of Environmental [IN]justices and the ongoing activism around them, discuss citizen-science initiatives and engage in some ART-ivism in community & public spaces. In true ode to Jane Jacobs, we’ll share a CALL TO ACTION around current efforts to mitigate the harms caused by the Moses-era highway and uplift community visions for the neighborhood.

Accessibility

The route will go near public spaces/playgrounds/parks lining the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, with some pathways being quite bumpy/broken sidewalks. There will be places to sit throughout the walk along our stops. Plenty of transit options in the area, including the G-L-JMZ trains, Williamsburg Buz Plaza, and CitiBikes.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
