Meta Moon Palace: Reader, Writer, and Hero in the Livable City

Janes Walk

Led By Dan McSweeney, Planning Committee Member, W111th Street Block Association

This is an event jointly organized by the W111th Street Block Association and the Morningside Heights Community Coalition. It will be our fifth annual walking tour of sites on and around W111th Street, between Amsterdam Avenue and Riverside Drive.

For the first time, we are linking our walk to a literary work, in this case, the novel Moon Palace by Paul Auster. That narrative is set in our neighborhood and by exploring it from the perspective of the reader, the author, and the protagonist, we will establish a setting that is both constant and ever-changing.

Our main theme is that our neighborhood’s “livability” has evolved over time. How is this measured and expressed in economic, cultural, political, and social terms? We will find out!
